Birmingham striker Choi Yuri suffers hamstring injury

Women"s national soccer team forward Choi Yoo-ri (Birmingham City) has been injured and dropped from the team.

"Choi Yoo-ri has been replaced by Jung Seol-bin (Incheon Hyundai Steel) as she undergoes rehabilitation for a hamstring tear," the Korea Football Association said on Wednesday.

The women"s soccer team, led by head coach Colleen Bell, will compete in the second round of qualifying for the Asia-Pacific region for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A total of 12 teams will compete in three groups of four teams. The top three teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, with the best-placed team from each group joining the final four.

The two teams that make it to the final will earn a ticket to the Paris Olympics. South Korea has never been to an Olympic Games.

South Korea is in Group B and will open against Thailand on Sept. 26 before facing North Korea on Sept. 29. On the first of next month, they will face China. These are formidable opponents.

The team has been training at the Paju NFC since Nov. 16. On the afternoon of the 23rd, they departed for China via Incheon International Airport.

Choi Yuri is the main striker for the national team. She also played at the 2023 FIFA Women"s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand last July. After playing for Hyundai Steel, Choi moved to Birmingham in England through the summer transfer market and has been playing overseas ever since.

Her replacement, Hyundai Steel forward Jung Seol-bin, has scored 10 goals in 20 league games this season. He ranks second in the WK League in goals scored.

Kim Hyung-jun\s spectacular outing after pushing out a catcher

It was NC Dinos" Kim Hyung-jun, 23, who broke a one-run deadlock in the seventh inning and became the fall baseball home run king.

Kim hit a solo home run off SSG"s Moon Seung-won in the seventh inning of the second game of the 2023 KBO League Semifinals (best-of-three) at SSG Landers Field in Incheon, South Korea, to lift the Dinos to a 7-3 victory. It was Yen"s only home run of the game, and the decisive "one hit wonder" that broke a 4-3 tie going into the seventh inning.

Kim Hyung-jun battled Moon Seung-won on a full count and then pulled a 127-kilometer-per-hour changeup on the eighth pitch for a 125-meter solo home run. Moon Seung-won took the mound in the fourth inning and didn"t allow a single hit until the seventh inning, but he quickly fell apart after allowing a hit to the next batter after the home run.

"Kim Hyung-joon"s home run in the eighth inning was the decisive moment that sealed the victory," said NC coach Kang Myung-hwon to reporters after the game, adding that the three runs scored after the home run were the reason for the victory. "I felt like I was throwing cold water on the team by failing to bunt in my previous at-bat, but I"m glad I hit a home run at a crucial moment," said Kim.

Kim Hyung-joon has been wearing the starting catcher"s mask this year in place of Park Se-hyuk because he has "good momentum" (coach Kang In-hwa) in fall baseball. He has lived up to Kang"s expectations, hitting three home runs in three games, including two in the first game of the wild-card series against the Doosan Bears on Sept. 19. Kim is carrying the momentum from his gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games into the postseason.

Verstappen finishes fifth in Singapore GP

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) slipped to fifth in the Singapore Grand Prix (GP), round 16 of the 2023 Formula One (F1) World Championship, failing to secure his 11th consecutive victory of the season.

Verstappen finished fifth in the Singapore GP final on Sunday at Singapore"s Marina Bay Street Circuit (4.940 kilometers - 62 laps), missing out on victory.

It was a disappointing end to a streak of 10 consecutive wins in the last 15 rounds, the most in a single season in history.

In the meantime, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who qualified first, claimed his first victory of the season in a "pole-to-win" fashion, starting from the front row of the grid and crossing the chequered flag first with a time of 1:46:37.418.

This makes Ferrari the first team to beat Red Bull (14 wins) to the top step of the podium in rounds 1-16 (round 6 was canceled) this season. It was also the first time this season that a Red Bull driver did not finish on the podium.

Lando Norris (McLaren) finished second by 0.812 seconds, with Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) third by 1.269 seconds to join Sainz on the winning podium. It was Norris" third second-place finish of the season.

At the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where overtaking is not easy, Sainz was able to defend his grid advantage all the way to victory.

Meanwhile, after qualifying 11th the previous day, Perstappen started the race from the 11th row of the grid on the hard tires, which are more durable but offer less grip. His strategy was to minimize pit stops to save time and improve his position.

Teammate Sergio Perez also started the race on hard tires from the 13th row of the grid.

However, Perstappen and Pérez (8th) had to settle for crossing the line faster than their starting positions.

Starting on the grippy but less durable soft tires, Sainz held the lead until he pitted for hard tires on lap 21, a strategy that paid off.

From lap 58, Sainz, Norris, George Russell (Mercedes) and Hamilton battled for the lead, with tension building on lap 59 when Sainz radioed that his front tires were at the end of their useful life.

The gap between Sainz and Norris shrank as the race entered the final 62 laps, with Russell, running third, retiring after colliding with the wall off Turn 10.

Sainz was able to hold on to the lead until the very end, crossing the finish line to take the win.

Sainz"s last podium finish was at the British GP in July 2022.
